Veterinary Hip Luxation Surgical Care Singapore
What is Hip Luxation?
Hip luxation refers to the dislocation of the hip joint, where the head of the femur (thigh bone) is displaced from the acetabulum (pelvis). Hip luxation is often caused by trauma, however the risk is higher in pets with pre-existing joint degeneration (arthritic changes) or hip dysplasia (inherent laxity of the hip joint).

What are my options?
There are several treatment options for a dislocated hip joint in a pet: Closed Reduction: This involves repositioning of the dislocated hip back to its normal position under general anaesthesia. Hip Toggle: A surgical procedure that replaces the hip and reconstructs the supporting ligament and soft tissue structures using a synthetic implant. Femoral Head and Neck Excision (FHNE): This surgery involves the removal of the hip joint and the creation of a 'false joint' to alleviate pain from dislocation while still allowing for mobility and function. Total Hip Replacement (THR): The hip joint is completely replaced with synthetic implants.
What is the best option for my pet?
Consulting with a surgeon is essential to determine the best treatment option for your pet, as not all available options may be suitable. The success of the treatment depends on the duration of the dislocation, the structure of the hip joint, your pet’s medical history, and any existing damage to the joint or surrounding soft tissue structures. With successful treatment, your pet is expected to regain the ability to walk and run, pain-free.
What is the recovery process?
After treatment, your pet will need to rest to allow for proper healing. The recommended duration of rest may range from 2 to 8 weeks.
