Veterinary Inter Vertebral Disc Disease Surgical Care (IVDD) Singapore
What is IVDD?
IVDD is the most common cause of back pain in dogs. When the discs in a dog’s spine becomes degenerate, they are weakened, making it harder for them to absorb shocks. This may eventually cause the discs to rupture, resulting in compression to the spinal cord and severe pain.

Signs & Symptoms
In mild cases, -Pain in neck or back -Weakness in limbs -Dragging or knuckling of paws -Incoordination or wobbliness -Some may simply display non-specific signs (inappetence, lethargy, clingy) In more severe cases, -Inability to stand or walk -Paralysis (inability to move limbs) -Loss of ability to feel pain in paw -Urinary or faecal incontinence
How is IVDD diagnosed?
A consultation with a surgeon is key for diagnosing IVDD, starting with a thorough review of medical history and symptoms. A physical and neurological examination helps identify the location of the IVDD, the severity of the condition and therefore prognosis to recovery. Advanced imaging, such as an MRI or a CT scan with myelogram, is necessary to confirm the diagnosis and pinpoint the affected disc in preparation for surgery.
Does my pet need surgery?
A consultation with a surgeon is necessary to determine whether surgery is needed. Not all patients require surgery to improve. Surgery is typically recommended for severe cases, or those that do not respond to medical management.
What does surgery involve?
The goal of surgery is to decompress the spinal cord using a minimal approach, known as a mini-hemilaminectomy. During surgery, the ruptured disc material causing compression is removed, relieving pain. Post-surgery, patients are monitored overnight by our 24/7 ICU team for a smooth recovery from anesthesia. Pain management and intensive nursing care, including help with repositioning, feeding, and hydration, are provided, especially for those unable to move independently. Some patients may also need assistance with urination after IVDD surgery.
How does my dog recover from IVDD?
After surgery, patients need 8 weeks of rest. The most significant improvement is often seen within the first 2 weeks. With early surgical intervention, most patients have a good prognosis for recovery back to walking.
