Understanding IVDD in Dogs: What You Should Know

What is IVDD (Intervertebral Disc Disease)?

IVDD (Intervertebral Disc Disease) is a condition where the discs in the spine, which act as cushions between the vertebrae, become damaged or displaced (moves out of place). This can lead to pressure on the spinal cord or nerves, causing pain, weakness, or even paralysis.

Types of IVDD:

  1. Type I: The inner part of the disc bursts and presses on the spinal cord. This is more common in smaller breeds like Dachshunds and Beagles.

  2. Type II: The outer part of the disc bulges and puts pressure on the spinal cord. This type is usually seen in larger breeds like Dobermans and German Shepherds.

Symptoms:

  • Pain, especially in the neck (hangs head very low) or back (hunched back)

  • Ataxia (Weakness in limbs) or difficulty moving

  • In severe cases, the dog may be paralyzed acutely

  • Loss of bladder or bowel control

  • Muscle Spasms

Treatment:

Depending on how your pet is presented, further imaging such as a CT scan or MRI may be required before a confirmed diagnosis.

Depending on findings, the vet may recommend either treating your pet conservatively (strict rest, anti-inflammatories and pain relief) to trial

OR surgical intervention in more serious cases (to remove the damaged disc and reduce pressure on the spinal cord).
